To The Creative Universe of Chris McCormick

I am a digital artist and designer based in the High Desert of Southern California, where the stark beauty of the Mojave serves as a constant backdrop for my work. My creative practice is a bridge between the tactile and the digital, blending vintage aesthetics with modern technology to explore new visual frontiers.

The Desert: A Grounded Foundation

The High Desert landscape provides the physical and spiritual anchor for my work. The Mojave’s stark geometry—the twisted silhouettes of Joshua trees, the jagged horizons, and the vast, open silence—serves as the perfect canvas. It is a place that feels ancient yet otherworldly, offering a sense of isolation that fuels creative exploration.

The Cosmos: The Infinite Frontier

While the desert keeps the work grounded, the cosmos pulls it upward. I incorporate cosmic patterns, nebulae, and celestial motifs to represent the unknown. This “Space Age” influence isn’t just about stars; it’s about the feeling of looking at a night sky in the desert and feeling both incredibly small and part of something vast. It introduces a sense of surrealism and wonder to the landscape.

The 1960s: The Aesthetic Lens

The 1960s provide the stylistic filter through which the desert and the cosmos are viewed. This era was defined by a specific kind of optimism and “flower power” energy, combined with a fascination with the burgeoning Space Race. I lean into the bold graphics of that decade:

The Synergy

When these three elements meet, they create a “Static Mirage.” It is a world where a 1960s astronaut might wander past a Mojave yucca, or where a psychedelic cosmic rift opens up over a mid-century desert bungalow. It’s about blending the tactile grit of the sand with the vibrant colors of pop art and the limitless possibilities of deep space.

My work is an exploration of atmosphere rather than just static imagery. It is a deliberate shift toward the “supernatural,” where I trade traditional design for a high-energy, psychedelic aesthetic. This evolution has led me to fully embrace Space Cadet Graphics, a creative space where I can push the boundaries of “future-nostalgia.”

The Creative Toolkit

To build these worlds, I utilize a specialized toolkit that blends human intuition with machine precision. By integrating Photoshop and Illustrator with artificial intelligence, I am able to generate raw, otherworldly brushes, textures and cosmic patterns that would be impossible to capture through traditional means alone. These elements are then hand-assembled, layered, and refined to ensure every piece carries a distinct, tangible energy. My images can be made of of dozens of these elements.

Crafting Future-Nostalgia

The goal is to create a visual frequency that feels both familiar and alien. It’s a style I call future-nostalgia:

The Future: Explored through sci-fi odyssey narratives, surreal landscapes, and the infinite possibilities of the cosmos.

The Nostalgia: Grounded in the bold, optimistic graphic language of the 1960s and mid-century modernism.

From striking graphic series to immersive digital collages, my work aims to evoke the feeling of a broadcast from a lost era—reimagined for the modern age. It is a transition from the expected into a universe of vivid color, desert grit, and celestial wonder.
